WHAT MAKES A MOTORCYCLE WARDROBE?

For some women, one of the best things about the world of motorcycling is a new wardrobe.

Women make up the fastest growing sector for the motorcycle industry. Manufacturers of street and off-road motorcycle apparel have grown just as fast in recent years to serve that expanding market of “what women want” that will go along with their motorcycle passion.

For old-time riders like myself, it’s amazing to see the tremendous selection of motorcycle gear in general, not even including the biker apparel targeted specifically for women. But it seems the choices for women are bound to surpass what is already an abundant selection available to men.

It makes sense that there would be different sizes and cuts specifically for women. But it’s the tremendous increase in colors and styles – for women only – that have really leveraged what motorcycle gear makers can provide. Although “pink” is a prominent color (Pink helmets. Pink leather. Pink gloves, pink boots, etc.), women’s motorcycle apparel is far richer than any one color.

How about high-heeled biker boots? I don’t recall noticing them a number of years ago, but they are available now!

What women motorcycle riders want is CHOICE. Although the selection possibilities for women motorcycle riders has never been as high as right now, my bet is that the trend will continue for motorbike apparel makers to provide more and more and more of what women motorcycle bikers really want.

LEATHER BIKER CHAPS FOR MEN AND WOMEN

Leather motorcycle chaps are leg coverings with a belt. Think of leather pants without the sections covering the butt or crotch. Chaps are buckled over the top of one’s pants with the chaps’ integrated belt.

They are designed to provide protection for the legs and are usually made of leather (or a leather-like material).

BIKER CHAPS ORIGINS

Chaps derive from the American cowboy culture and were used as leg protection when riding a horse through brushy terrain.

LEATHER MOTORCYCLE CHAPS, adapted from cowboy gear, started to find their way into the American biker culture in the early 1960s.

Leather motorcycle chaps are usually made with the smooth side out, and have side zippers to allow them to be put on easily.

They provide bikers protection from the wind and cold as well as partial abrasion protection in the event of a fall to the roadway.

HARLEY DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE GEAR, ACCESSORIES AND APPAREL

Way back in 1901 (before one of us was born), William Harley, at the ripe age of 21, put together some plans for a small engine for use in a conventional (for the time) pedal-bicycle frame.

After two years, with the help of his friend, Arthur Davidson, and Arthur’s brother, Walter Davidson, Harley and crew found their power-cycle unable to make it up the modest hills in their Milwaukee hometown without pedal assistance.

Harley and crew started working on their next machine, which was to become the first “real” Harley-Davidson motorcycle. This one had a bigger engine and better frame, which transitioned the contraption from the category of motorized-bicycle into the new era of what was becoming a modern motorcycle.

In January 1905, the marketing of Harley Davison began with small advertisements that offered only the engines for the do-it-yourself handyman.

In 1906, their first factory was established and to this day remains as the location for what was to become the Motor Company’s corporate headquarters.

Since that time, some other folks on our little planet have grown to like what those boys started and their machines are respected around the globe. And like anything else that people become fond of, all kinds of other stuff developed around that so admiring folks can buy as gifts: some practical, such as protective gear, and motorcycle parts. Other things, such as Harley Davidson neon accent lights, probably not so necessary, but certainly a part of customizing one’s bike!
