THREE-SECOND MOTORCYCLE SAFETY ZONE
What’s a quick and easy way to buffer your long-term motorcycle enjoyment with an increased safety zone?
Count to three slowly; as in three seconds.
That’s the amount of time that should be separating you and the vehicle in front of you.
You can mark the time by noting the vehicle in front of you as it passes a stationary object, such as a speed-limit sign. When the car passes the object, start counting.

It should be at least three seconds before you pass the same object.

Obviously, the faster you are going, the more physical distance that should exist between you and the vehicle in front of you. The three-second rule helps you to keep an appropriate buffer zone in front of you and should give you enough time to react in case something unfriendly occurs (such as the vehicle suddenly braking because of something in the road that you cannot yet see).

Next time you are on the road, regardless of whether you are going fast or slow, check the distance that you normally keep between you and the motorist in front of you by counting off the seconds. You may be surprised to find that you aren’t giving yourself enough of a buffer….

Ride safely!

THE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY DEBATE WILL NEVER END
Jeez. If you ride a bike for fun, why spend too much time thinking about safety? Especially, if one is a competent and safe rider who has tens of thousands of incident-free miles to prove it.
Right?
The motorcycle safety debate will never end.
“I’M A GOOD RIDER”
Although there are variations of viewpoints on the matter, generally they can be encompassed by two ends of one spectrum:

“I’m a good rider. I won’t crash.” (Hence, motorcycle safety concerns are less relevant).
“I’m a good rider. But I ...

But I don’t know about every other driver on the road.” (In other words, any ride, on any day, has the potential to result in crash).

ANOTHER VIEWPOINT ON 2 KINDS OF RIDERS

There’s also another viewpoint about two kinds of riders: “Those that have gone down, and those that will.”

Although, personally, I’m a rider who has gone down dramatically more than once, I don’t believe that it’s inevitable that every rider will bite the pavement.

So, where do you fall in the debate? Well, regardless of what you may think or say, the true answer is reflected in what you wear when you ride.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY GEAR

So, if you believe you are a “safety-conscious rider,” next time you get ready to jump on your bike, take a quick inventory of what you are wearing relative to this safety-gear checklist.

Many riders who SAY they practice motorcycle safety, cannot say “Yes” to each item on the checklist.

Riders crash every day. Too many bikers get killed – every day. And yet it seems to be an innate concept amongst humans that “It won’t happen to me.” Which means every rider who crashes is thinking the same thing: “It won’t happen to me.”

The good new is that some riders will probably be right: “It won’t happen to them.” So, for those “some” that are right (so far) about carrying forward the torch of motorcycle un-safety: carry on!

RIDE SAFELY WITH PROTECTIVE GEAR!

But for the rest of us, a little reflection on how to improve one’s ability to enjoy riding as long as possible includes:

Wearing protective gear

Increasing one’s riding skills (study, training, practice)

Gaining lots of riding experience! (Ideally, while developing good riding habits)

Ride safely!

But how about an inexpensive motorcycle gift that can keep you, your buddies and/or biker loved-one in a better state of rider-safety awareness?

For most bikers, motorcycle safety is a boring subject – until the grim reaper might brush their shoulder after an accident, or even a near-miss that could easily have turned tragic.

For some riders, their first reaction is to blame someone else. But, however justified it may be that another motorist did something stupid resulting in a bad event for you, having a keener appreciation of the basics of motorcycle safety is a proactive way to prepare you for Mr. and Mrs. Inattentive Driver.

The following motorcycle safety tips won’t guarantee anyone immortality, but they sure go a long way towards helping any rider enjoy motorcycle riding a long time. And what could be a better gift than that?
