RETRO LOOK FOR STREET – STANDARD GEAR FOR DIRT

If you’re a dirt-bike rider, you are well-acquainted with MOTORCYCLE GOGGLES.

If you’re a street-bike rider only, then statistically speaking, you probably don’t own or wear bike goggles, and/or are not even familiar with them.

However, their use for bikers goes back a long time. In fact, some of the current styles of street goggles look very retro because, well, they are.

Other styles look nerdy and others are targeted to the “extreme sports” world, and there are many additional styles, available, too.

Most motorbike goggles are for off-road and motocross applications.

PURPOSE OF MOTORCYCLE GOGGLES

So, if you’re thinking of buying motorcycle goggles as a gift, or, if you just want to know more about them, well, here’s some things to consider:

The purpose of motorcycle goggles is to keep wind, bugs, dirt particles or any other kind of airborne debris from getting into your eyes. Goggles do this better than sunglasses because they are sealed around the sides of the eyes.

Goggles should also allow as wide a field of view as possible, and need to be comfortable. If the goggles reduce your peripheral vision too much, they are actually reducing their safety value. If they are uncomfortable, then they reduce the rider’s enjoyment.

Additional features to consider would be venting in the goggles, which can reduce excess heat, as well as anti-fogging properties which since fogged lenses defeat the purpose of having clear vision. (Some of the most expensive goggles even have micro fans to keep air circulating.)

Just keep in mind that “motocross” goggles are NOT the kind you wear on the street if you’re after that “retro” look on the pavement.
