Scooter vs. Motorcycle
“CUTE” BIKES WITH A KICK
Scooters are an interesting breed of motorbikes. They are a popular form of transportation in Europe and a dominant type of transportation in Asia. Although they’ve been around in America for a long time, they’ve only come into their own in recent years with escalating fuel prices.
And nowadays, with the advent of larger scooter engines, those “cute” little bikes can really get one where he/she wants to go – with not only a bigger power kick than ever before, but with a greater economic kick, compared to a motorcycle (in terms of gas consumption and overall cost).
SCOOTER DIFFERENCES FROM MOTORCYCLES
Although there are a number of distinctions between scooters and motorcycles, here are the most visible differences:
- Scooters are built with a step-through frame and floorboards (You need to swing at least one of your legs “over” a motorcycle, but not on a scooter)
- Scooters have smaller wheels than traditional motorcycles
- The engine on a scooter is mounted near the rear wheel (on a motorcycle the engine is centrally located)
Although scooters are most renown for little engines (as small as 50cc), nowadays they come with engines up to 850cc, and that ain’t no small scooter engine!
And believe it or not, modern scooters are available in “sport,” “commuter,” and even “touring” models.
Having said all that, those differences don’t tell the full story. As great and economical as scooters are, they are not motorcycles. Which merely means that if one is truly into the world of motorcycling, even a big scooter will not represent the power, performance, look, sound, emotional quality and general camaraderie that a traditional motorcycle engenders.
Regardless, look to see more and more scooters sharing your road.

I love my scooter!
